Bartlett Police Department Launches Blue Envelope Program to Support Drivers with Autism
The Bartlett Police Department, in partnership with the Autism Hero Project, is proud to announce the launch of the Blue Envelope Program, an initiative designed to support drivers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during interactions with law enforcement officers and other first responders.
The Blue Envelope Program serves as a safety and communication tool, helping to foster more effective, informed, and positive interactions between individuals with ASD and emergency personnel.
The program’s objectives are to provide:
- Enhanced Understanding: By providing officers with immediate and accessible information about ASD, the Blue Envelope Program promotes awareness, empathy, and patience, contributing to more positive interactions.
- Reduced Anxiety: Traffic stops and emergency situations can be particularly stressful for individuals with autism. The Blue Envelope acts as a visual indicator, enabling officers to adjust their communication approach and help reduce anxiety for the driver.
- Streamlined Communication: The envelope includes practical guidance for officers, supporting clear and effective communication, even in high-stress situations.
- Encouraging Preparedness: The program empowers individuals with ASD and their families to be better prepared by organizing essential documents and understanding how to present them during a traffic stop.
During a traffic stop or other interaction with law enforcement, such as a motor vehicle crash, a driver with ASD may present the Blue Envelope to the responding officer. The exterior of the envelope provides important information for both the driver and the officer. Inside, the envelope is intended to hold the driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and a contact card. The contact card includes the name and telephone number of a trusted individual who may be contacted if additional assistance or information is needed.
Residents of Bartlett may obtain a Blue Envelope at the Bartlett Police Department, located at 228 S. Main St. Envelopes are available at the front desk 24 hours a day. For additional information about the program, please contact Sergeant Johnson at chjohnson@bartlettil.gov or 630-540-5139.
